The key moments in the company history

  • The station's funicular begins operating with a water-driven traction system

  • The “Società luganese dei Tramway elettrici” (Lugano Electric Tramway Company) is founded and the first 3 lines are activated

  • Under the name "Tranvie elettriche comunali", the City of Lugano resume the management of the "Società luganese dei Tramway elettrici"

  • The first bus begins circulating in the city

  • The tram leaves the city, the trolley buses arrive

  • Ruggì vehicle maintenance depot in Pregassona becomes operational

  • The Azienda Comunale dei Trasporti (Municipal Transport Company; ACTL) participates in establishing the Ticino and Moesano fare community. 11 companies are involved to offer users a single ticket valid on all means of transport.

  • Trasporti Pubblici Luganesi (TPL) resumes operation of the ACTL: with the transition from municipally-owned company to joint-stock company, decision-making mechanisms similar to those in the private economy are introduced, enabling changes and innovations in the organisation and service to be made more quickly.

  • Buses replace trolley buses on the streets of Lugano

  • TPL takes over management of the Cassarate Monte Brè Funicular

  • New interchange terminal Lugano Centro

  • The sales and information office opens

  • Real-time visualisation of the bus in transit via GPS tracking

  • Digital information signs system is introduced at bus stops

  • The technical centre of competence (CTC) is established

  • The Viability Plan for the Lugano Hub (PVP) and the Arcobaleno Integrated Fare (TIA) result in an improved and more integrated service at the cantonal level.

  • Opening and management of the new P&R Cornaredo Resega

  • TPL takes over the management of Ferrovie Luganesi SA

  • The funicular station is re-opened with renewed technology and design

  • Opening and management of the new P&R's of Cornaredo Stadio Est and Cornaredo Termica

  • Renovation of the vehicle fleet with the introduction of EURO 6 buses

  • TPL turns 20
    Inauguration of new Operations Centre at the company headquarter of Pregassona

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company implemented the necessary measures to ensure the continuity of essential services.

           Phase 1

  • Strengthening of public transport at the cantonal level (Città Ticino) in conjunction with the opening of the Monte Ceneri Base Tunnel
  • Extension of routes and timetables, and expansion of the fleet with 9 articulated buses

            Phase 2

  • Further enhancement of public transport at the cantonal level (Città Ticino)
  • Inauguration and activation of the new depot in Pregassona
  • First on-road test of a fully electric vehicle on Line 5
  • Renewal of the joint operation agreement with FMB
     
  • TPL takes part in the 175th anniversary celebrations of public transport
     
  • The electrification project for Line 5 takes shape thanks to the client’s approval
     
  • With the approval of the new Sports and Events Center (PSE) in Cornaredo, the Cornaredo Stadium East P+R is decommissioned
     
  • TPL launches a public tender for the procurement of electric buses for the future Line 5
     
  • Introduction of the first Euro 6 hybrid buses in the vehicle fleet
     
  • Continuation of works for the PSE and the Cornaredo Termica P+R
     
  • The project for a fully electrified Line 5 becomes operational
     
  • The purchase of buses and the necessary infrastructure works are approved
     
  • TPL celebrates its 25th anniversary!
     
  • Preparation for the electrification of Line 5 scheduled for the timetable change on December 14 — once again getting ready to drive you into the future... with the fully electrified Line 5.
