The Funicular

The Funicular

Inaugurated in 1886 and having undergone renovations completed in 2016, the Lugano City-SBB railway station funicular offers a fast connection between the SBB railway station and the city centre.

The Funicular

The funicular, also known as "La Sassellina", is based on semi-automatic operation with staff present at the departure stations and only in certain time slots. Service continuity is guaranteed by an advanced dual-component traction system.

A video surveillance system along the route, at stops, and in the carriages, ensures passenger safety. The structure of the stops is also geared towards safety, with the stops surrounded by glass walls and equipped with automatic doors that open when the cabin arrives.
